Read your park regulations. No felt on your boots in Yellowstone Park in 2018 and beyond!
The Firehole, Madison and Gibbon Rivers opened to fishing May 26, the opening day of fishing season in Yellowstone Park. Rivers were high and off-color a week ago, but now coming into shape quickly and quite nicely. Of the three rivers on the west side of Yellowstone, the Firehole is fishing best, followed by the Madison and the Gibbon which is still too swift below the falls to fish well right now.
Hatches have been sporadic. The trout have been taking soft hackles, small to medium bead-head nymphs and small streamers better than dries due to the flows and water clarity. Dry fly action should pick up quickly once the Firehole and Gibbon Rivers drop to normal spring flows in the next few days or week.
Firehole flow: 143
Gibbon flow: 264
