Yellowstone Lake and River

July 17, 2018 9:00 am

Yellowstone Lake opened to fishing May 26. The fishing has been very good along the shoreline from Sedge Bay all the way West Thumb. Walk the beaches and cast woolly buggers, small streamers or bead-nymphs out into the lake and strip back. Action should be consistent as cutthroat cruise the shorelines of the lake. Fishing for lake trout in Yellowstone Lake will require a boat and deep trolling lures or spinners to catch them.

The Yellowstone River opened to fishing July 15 2018.

Below Tower, the Yellowstone River can be legally fished but the flows are off the charts for the end of May. Again, a huge snow pack in the mountains surrounding Yellowstone is melting and has created less than stellar fishing conditions throughout the Park, as well as the northern Rocky Mountains.

We expect the lower Yellowstone to fish well sometime around July 15, which also coincides with the annual opening day on the upper Yellowstone River. Stay tuned! North Fork Anglers will keep you up to date on Park fishing conditions and hot spots as the season progresses.
