Beartooth Lakes

October 15, 2020 2:00 am

All the lakes on the Wyoming side of the Beartooth Mountains are fishing great. Enjoy! If going to the lakes past Top of the World, the road is being rebuilt and traffic delays up to 30 minutes exist in places. Campgrounds are shutting down for the winter season, so a hike might be required to fish Island Lake and Beartooth Lake.

Dries will be Griffith’s gnats, elk hair caddis, small parachute Adams, ants, beetles, and royal trudes or Wulff’s. The streams up high are perfect for 1-4 weight fly rods. Tippet size 4-6X.

For lakes – leeches, small buggers, soft hackle or bead-head nymphs should get action sub-surface.

Pack bear spray!! Bears are very active now that hunting season is occurring in the high country. Take a camera, too. The fall colors are splendid.
