Luce and Hogan Lakes

November 15, 2020 12:00 pm

Hogan and Luce have been fishing fair. Cold weather this weekend could completely ice over the lakes. We are about to the end of the open water season and will have to look forward to next spring’s ice out.

Access to Luce is from the Hogan reservoir parking lot off County Road 7 RP. If the road is dry, access is no problem. If it has been snowing, 4 wheel drive might required. Sight casting on Luce has been productive. Go wet with small leech patterns or bead headed soft hackled hare’s ears, pheasant tails, Prince nymphs and midge pupae.

Please make sure you fasten the gate to Luce Reservoir to prevent cattle from escaping. Also, there have been sightings of grizzly bears on these lakes. Pack bear spray.

If there is still open water, these are the recommended flies to use. Scuds, Zebra midges, San Juan worms, smaller bead-head Prince, pheasant tails, hare’s ears or North Fork Specials. Also, small leech patterns and mid-sized streamers (#4-#12)
