Yellowstone Lake and River below Fishing Bridge

July 11, 2021 9:00 am

Yellowstone Lake is fishing well near the rocky points and rock structures along the shoreline from Sedge Bay to West Thumb. Streamers and sinking lines or sink-tip fly lines help get those streamers in the zone and in front of some very nice Yellowstone cutthroat!!

The Yellowstone River opens in the upper reaches below Fishing Bridge on July 15. We will have reports on the hatches and water conditions beginning July 14. Flows coming from Yellowstone Lake are much lower than those seen in 2020. Lots of bugs hatching now, but few trout have been seen rising to them below LeHardy Rapids to Mud Volcano prior to the opening day.

Below Tower/Roosevelt, the Yellowstone River is dropping now that the heat has erased the snowmelt. Insects active are golden stones, green drakes, caddis and PMD’s.

Anglers are doing best fishing larger nymph stonefly imitations and streamers. Some dry action on salmonfly, golden stone and caddis patterns.
