Madison, Gibbon, and Firehole YNP

June 20, 2022 9:00 am

These reported waters are fly fishing only. North Fork Anglers sells Yellowstone National Park fishing licenses for your convenience.

Yellowstone’s fishing season is Memorial Day weekend to the first Monday in November.

Madison River – flow at W. Yellowstone 801 cfs.

Firehole River at Old Faithful – 172 cfs

Firehole River at Madison Junction and Gibbon River confluence – 472 cfs.

Gibbon River at Madison Junction – 321 cfs (approximate)

These rivers are dropping in flow and beginning to fish better every day now that the floods ended a week ago. Hatches are blue winged olives, caddis, some PMD’s, salmon flies and smaller golden stones. We recommend matching wet flies to the hatches going on throughout the day. We also recommend changing flies regularly to keep your rod bent.

If you can’t figure out the hatches, switch to streamers 2-5 inches in length. Black, olive, white and tan are good color choices.

Should you want an immediate update on flows, water quality, hatches, fly suggestions, we advise you call, not email, North Fork Anglers at 307-527-7274 for that. We also suggest and recommend that you do the same for the 2022 Guided Trip season to reserve dates and guides. We are already getting bookings for late spring and summer trips in 2022. If  you have your dates picked out, we urge you to get a deposit made as soon as possible so you don’t miss the chance to float or walk/wade Cody/Bighorn area rivers and streams.
