East and West Newton Lakes

August 7, 2022 9:00 am

Water temps right now are 74 degrees at East Newton. These temps are stressful to trout. We recommend that you fish West Newton Lake, or somewhere else until September 1 when temps begin to drop again. This will give the trout time to heal up from the spring fishing and gain some weight in the process.

West Newton which has temps in the mid-60’s due to depth. Damsel flies, ants, beetles and small hoppers on the surface. Smaller beadhead nymphs, leeches and buggers below the surface are working well. Be prepared to see lots of paddle boarders, tubers and dogs splashing around in both lakes. It’s summer!!

Flies: Zebra midges, Ice cream cones – black or red, size 10-14. Pheasant tails, hares ear, balanced leeches, parachute Adams, adult damsels, wooly buggers, leeeches and bead head nymphs are working at West Newton.

Should you want an immediate update on flows, water quality, hatches, fly suggestions, we advise you call, not email, North Fork Anglers at 307-527-7274 for that. We also suggest and recommend that you do the same for the 2022 Guided Trip season to reserve dates and guides. We are already getting bookings for late spring and summer trips in 2022. If you have your dates picked out, we urge you to get a deposit made as soon as possible so you don’t miss the chance to float or walk/wade Cody/Bighorn area rivers and streams.
